Internet Connection Services:
Dial-up Access
Medium Speed ISDN Access
High Speed T1 Access
Dial-Up Access service to the Internet operates at low speed (below 56 Kbps) and so is mostly used by personnel working away from the office. With dial-up service, a notebook computer gains full access to the Internet wherever it connects to a telephone line. Access to E-mail services is included.
Medium Speed ISDN Access service operates at a speed of 64 Kbps per line; since typically two lines are provided, in practice, the speed of an ISDN service is 128 Kbps. This is fast enough to permit the lines to be used for both voice and data transmission. In fact, it is sufficiently fast to support several simultaneous connections to the Internet via a router-an electronic box that attaches to your local area network (LAN). The installation permits individual E-mail services for everyone at their computer on the LAN.
High Speed T1 Access service operates 1.544Mbps. Whereas ISDN consists of two 64 Kbps lines (channels), a T-1 connection consists of 24 such channels, each capable of voice and data transmission. As with ISDN, connection to the Internet is via a router. Likewise, the installation permits individual E-mail services for everyone at their computer on the LAN.
